"The dinosaurs are not my friends." As soon as Sam Neil uttered these words in Steven Spielberg’s 1993 Jurassic Park, they became the most memorable line in the film. And now, 20 years later, Jurassic World is here to prove him right. But this time it has a twist: the dinosaurs are our friends. Though it’s a big step up from what many moviegoers might remember from childhood, this movie was still divisive among critics and audiences alike. Many found it to be a generic and unoriginal follow-up to the original, with the second act feeling too rushed and lacking in drama. To be sure, Jurassic World is no masterpiece. It’s still saddled with some glaring flaws that will take viewer patience and attention away from what's supposed to be its greatest strength: the dinosaurs. The CGI isn’t nearly as seamless as it was in the original film. Even so, the dinosaurs still look great, especially in action scenes. While many modern blockbusters are beginning to shy away from having their protagonists directly fight for their lives against CGI creatures, Jurassic World bucks that trend. It’s nice to see Chris Pratt’s Owen Grady actually get his hands dirty, facing off against dinosaurs without any weapons or special powers or enhancements other than his own ingenuity and training. That fact alone makes this film a good deal edgier than the previous entries in the franchise, which featured an abundance of direct callbacks to Steven Spielberg’s original vision. And while the dinosaurs are clearly the main focus of this film, it’s not all about them. JP3 was an ensemble piece that had several secondary characters that played crucial roles in the film’s climax. Jurassic World, however, is focused more narrowly on its human characters and their relation to the dinosaurs. On that level it succeeds, but at the expense of some of its best moments from JP3. In general reviewer's reviews were polarized towards this movie. The movie received a rating of 56% on Rotten Tomatoes with a consensus: "Jurassic World fulfills its mission without duplicating the serious bravery and suspense of Steven Spielberg's classic original. It's a popcorn blockbuster that's as entertaining as it needs to be, but lacks the freshness and ingenuity that characterized the first film." Another critic said: ""Jurassic World" is as safe as it is thrilling, but as a long-awaited "Jurassic Park" sequel it topples the duller formulaic sequels." But other critics were impressed by this movie. One of them gave this movie 4 out of 5 stars and said: This fourth installment in the series reboots and revives one of Hollywood’s most beloved franchises, following up on two underwhelming sequels.
